Graduate of Yale Law School, author of The Legal Mind and is currently the Chief Campus Counsel for the University of California.
For years, I wanted to write a book for a general audience about how the law really works, especially how the legal system thinks about and deals with deception, forgetting, and ambiguity. These are fascinating topics, but also knotty ones, and for the longest time I couldn’t get started because I didn’t know where to begin. Then I found Scrivener. One year later, my book The Legal Mind is published and recently ranked Number 7 on Amazon’s bestseller list in the One L: Legal Profession category.
With its flexible writing environment, Scrivener didn’t force me to begin at the beginning. I could write where I wanted to write, and when I got stuck, I could switch to another part of the book and then come right back to where I left off.
Scrivener’s binder was a key ingredient to my success. It served as an outliner when I was getting started and a table of contents when I finished. In between, it allowed me to easily reorganize the material as I figured out what I wanted to say and how.
Scrivener has received a lot of accolades as a tool for writing novels, but I can attest that it works great for non-fiction. For my book, I did everything in Scrivener from outlining, researching, and drafting to revising and outputting a near-final product that only required minor tweaking to get ready for publication. Without Scrivener, The Legal Mind would have been forever locked in my imagination. Because of Scrivener, The Legal Mind is a reality.
